The allure of working from home has certainly tantalized many a 9-to-5er who has to get up every morning, fight rush-hour traffic, and work in an office eight hours a day. There are, however, many scams out there, especially since the advent of the Internet. I've personally sent money in to one or two of these organizations, signed up, and never heard from them again. Other people have been luckier than I have, though. With the economy on shaky ground, and companies downsizing every day, the work-from-home scenario might be something to consider, albeit cautiously.

For many years, a friend of mine had a job that he loved: writing grants for a local charity. Three years ago, however, budget cuts at the state level forced him out of his job. Faced with a 30% reduction in their own budget, the homeless shelter for which he worked could no longer afford to pay a grant writer. After ten years of steady employment, he was jobless.

My friend didn’t even consider a work-from-home job as a feasible option. He also had heard that a lot of these work-from-home jobs on the Internet were scams. He started sending out resumes, going on job interviews, and collecting unemployment. For two years, he made a career out of finding a new job. Living on savings and unemployment compensation, he kept sending out resumes and going on job interviews, all to no avail. The work-at-home jobs he did run across all seemed to be schemes to get his money. And then one day, after reading another ''Thank you for your time and interest in our company'' letter, he came across a short ad on an online discussion board. The post was looking for freelance writers to work from home writing short articles on various subjects. ''Why not?'' he thought to himself. ''What have I got to lose?''

As it turns out the answer was ''nothing.'' He had nothing to lose and a whole new career to gain. Answering that posting was just the start. Within a month, he was making as much money doing work from home as he had when he was going into the office every day.

There are many work-from-home opportunities available if you know where to look for them. You can find online job boards and freelance services for typing, medical transcription, data entry, and writing jobs. There are also work-from-home jobs in the realm of sales, advertising, home services, and personal assistance. All you need to do is find them. My friend was lucky, but maybe if you look hard enough, you can come across a work-at-home job that gives you the freedom that you’re craving. Here are some of the most common work-at-home jobs you’ll run across:
  1. Data Entry: Some of the best jobs are data entry jobs which can be performed on your home computer. The only tools necessary are a computer and Internet access. A data entry professional may be paid by piece work or on an hourly basis. This should be worked out between you and your potential employer prior to accepting any assignments.

  2. Transcription Jobs: Once again, a home computer and Internet access are what’s needed. Transcription jobs require good listening skills and fast typing ability. A quiet area to do your work would also be a good thing to have.

  3. Freelance Writing Jobs: Freelance writing can be a very lucrative business. If a person is good with words and can type quickly and accurately, he or she can earn a lot of money. Some of these jobs might include writing website content, marketing copy, newsletters, press releases, and legal contracts.

  4. Translation Jobs: If you’re bilingual, then you’re a real asset to the freelance exchange community. People all over the world doing business commonly face a language barrier. Someone who can translate documents and verbal communication has the ability to make some good money.

  5. Stuffing Envelopes: Not the most exciting of jobs, but one that you can do if you don’t have access to a computer or don’t have typing skills. These jobs can be an excellent source of income and an easy way to pull in extra cash each month.

  6. Assembly at Home: If you are very skillful with your hands, you have the ability to earn an income assembling products at home. This is also a viable alternative for someone who does not have a computer at home.

  7. Home Typist Jobs: Home typists are sought by companies all over the world to perform virtual assistant duties and secretarial tasks. These jobs usually entail data entry, scheduling, billing, customer service, translation, transcription, and bookkeeping.
