Nurses have traditionally been involved in bedside hospital care. Times are however changing with free work–at–home jobs. With better technologies and communications, nurses are now moving quickly into a new age where bedside care is not always necessary. Nurses can administer care from a distance, from the comfort of their homes; they can use their homes as their offices. There are some options available for nurses who choose to work–at–home.

A telenurse provides services over the phone to patients. To be able to work in telehealth, a nurse needs to have an associated nursing degree and recent experience in triage nursing. The nurse offers advice over the telephone in all kinds of cases including emergency cases. The number of telenurses is increasing because of the healthcare industry’s desire to save the cost of staffing healthcare facilities with nurses to handle situations that can be handled over the phone. This career is gaining popularity with the increasing number of aging individuals residing at home and requiring help. This is another way for the healthcare industry to manage the shortage of nurses, and it saves gas and time as well. This career affords the individuals the flexibility of choosing their own work schedules to fit their personal lives. Telenurses answer calls at homes that are forwarded from call centers. Salaries are competitive; a telenurse in Chicago earns an average annual salary of $75,000.

Medical transcription is one of the fastest growing work-at-home jobs. A transcriptionist transcribes voice-recorded reports dictated by physicians and other professionals. The medical transcriptionist converts the recordings into written medical reports. They can also transcribe correspondences and administrative paperwork as required. The medical transcriptionist needs to be able to understand medical terms and write grammatically correct reports. Understanding patient confidentiality is an important part of the job. Pay is usually set according to the amount of workload, and can be as per word, per line, or per page. A medical transcriptionist can make as much as $20 an hour. The requirements of the job depend on the employers requiring the services. Being a nurse with writing skills can set a candidate above the rest.

Case managers evaluate the disability claims of patients. They are the coordinators between the physicians and the therapists, and oversee the return-to-work process of injured patients. Their job is to ensure that outcomes are cost effective. They are also the go-to people when there are problems between the patients and the healthcare system. Most case managers are well known for their utilization reviews. They plan a patient’s care, which includes checking available benefits; and they also recommend the length of the hospital stay if necessary. Salaries range from $35,000 to $102,000, depending on where the case managers are located and what their responsibilities are.

Home health care nurses or visiting nurses, and hospice nurses are employed by nursing agencies. They visit patients’ homes to help patients recovering from illnesses. They dress wounds, take vitals, and generally improve the quality of health of individuals. Visiting nurses are dispatched from their homes by the agencies that they work for. Salaries depend on region, agency, and caseload. Median annual salary is similar to that of a registered nurse, i.e., $52,000 a year.
Take advantage of these free work-at-home jobs and start pursuing a career as a telecommuting nurse.
