Coding professionals have the task of organizing and compiling the medical treatment information recorded by doctors, then sending the information to insurance companies for payment. Their biggest responsibility is coding the information which is completely accurate and can be understood universally. A coder supervises and coordinates activities of coding unit personnel engaged in coding and abstracting medical data research. A coder plans and schedules work for coding and abstracting and medical data research employees to ensure proper distribution of assignments and adequate space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties. A coder ensures an effective data collection and processing system by reviewing and analyzing data input, and processing and data output activities. A coder performs audits to evaluate the quality and timelines of coding and abstracting completion to ensure optimum reimbursement to the hospital. A coder develops and presents timely, relevant educational programs to hospital and medical staff members regarding coding, diagnosis related groups.
A coder requires one year coding diploma or courses in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology and extensive training in coding and requires four years of experience in medical records or a related area. A coder should have skills necessary to supervise and coordinate medical data coding and abstracting of inpatient and/or outpatient information. A coder should have effective written and verbal communication skills.
